Christmas Trends 2018

“December… Saving the best till last.” One of our favourite parts of the festive season is getting to decorate our trees, adorn our homes and set the table in a different style every year. We’ve been busy venturing across the seas and travelling interstate this past year to collect ideas and bring you our favourite trends this coming Christmas. Let the magic of Christmas 2018 begin! Wabi Sabi Originating from the Japanese language, Wabi-Sabi means to accept imperfection. It is a belief and aesthetic based on recognizing that something incomplete can become beautiful. A design example we love is expanding on our connection to the earth through natural materials. This trend is taking over from the Hygge trend (the cosy contentment of simple living) and leads into a Scandinavian tone but with a focus on abandoning perfection. Focus on textures such as metal and driftwood to incorporate this beautifully flawed trend into your home this Christmas. Our go to colours: Gun-metal grey, silver, olive green and natural hues   Traditional Green, red and gold. The combination of these colours has screamed Christmas for centuries. Add a few little berries to your wreath to enhance the festive ambience and decorate the tree in glitter, matte and reflective finishes for a contemporary twist. Make a statement with vibrant red velvet poinsettias or keep it familiar by dressing the house in colours reminiscent of a childhood spent waiting for Santa. From nutcracker soliders to reindeers, this iconic Christmas trend isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and we can’t wait to see how it continues to change and adapt year after year. Our go to...

Top 5 Christmas jobs of 2017

From designing the concepts to the all-night installations, VM+ had a very busy Christmas in 2017! Contact the team at VM+ to bring the magic of Christmas to your venue in 2018. 1 William Street With tones of copper, champagne and silver, 1 William Street sparkled this Christmas. Nutcracker soldiers heralded the magic of Christmas with their trumpets, greeting passers by, while the 7.5m tree in the foyer ensured a spectacular display of Christmas joy. Silver ribbon twisted around spiraling baubles on the main tree, while twinkling lights complimented the sophisticated trimming.   Valley Malls One of our most unique Christmas installations for 2017 was the Valley Malls, including China Town and Brunswick Street Mall. Multiple components were constructed by a large team who worked collaboratively to ensure this job embraced everything that we love about Christmas. It was a visual feast of colour, movement and light. VM+ created a destination to be enjoyed by everyone, and celebrated the Valley’s reputation of dancing the night away. Inspiration was drawn from the nightlife in London’s Covent Garden and included features such as two giant dazzling rotating mirror balls, twinkling icicle lights, wreaths and garlands. Matched to existing oriental elements in China Town, wreaths and garlands were trimmed in a red and gold colour palette to maintain tradition with a twist of modern finishes. Banners hung from structures to highlight the Christmas season and take the precinct into...

All That Glitters Is Gold

“Shine like gold, sparkle like glitter“   The VM+ Christmas elves have been busy this year transforming Toombul Shopping Centre with a decorative style that oozes opulence. By using a simple colour palette, the team at VM+ has created a distinctive style for this Brisbane shopping centre. By limiting colour and focusing on texture the foliage comes alive with a sense of luxury. The gold accents of glitter and sequins become illuminated as the warm twinkling lights reflect off their surfaces. By using striped and spotted baubles and zip baubles that link back to the fashion retailers, these decorations ensure a point of difference this busiest time of the shopping year! The addition of geometric sputniks and spiked silver and gold balls enhance the solid gold and compliment the overall tones of the design. If there was a flower which epitomised Christmas, it would have to be the poinsettia. Classically red, the team at VM+ provided tradition through the use of black and white striped and gold beaded poinsettias. The contemporary tones helped freshen the overall trimming while establishing the Christmas decorations as a statement series throughout the centre. A cluster of five slimline Christmas trees enforce the magic of Christmas through their varying heights and festive trimming. The nutcracker soldiers herald the beginning of the festive season through their metallic trumpets, transporting visitors to the North Pole with a twist of New York luxe. How to Make the Perfect Bow

Follow the instructions below to create the perfect bow for your Christmas tree or any occasion. Cut your ribbon of choice to the desired length. For 50mm wide ribbon we recommend a length of approximately 800mm. For 200mm wide ribbon cut to a length of 1200mm, cut each end in a V shape to create the tail. Fold the ribbon as per the first diagram below, with the best side of the ribbon on the outside. Gather together centre of ribbon loop and centre of ribbon crossover as per second diagram. Twist green florist wire around this central point to hold the bow secure. Add balls or decorations with florist wire to the centre of the bow to create the perfect posies for your tree. Note: the best bow is created when using wired ribbon. This ribbon with bendable wire incorporated into the outside edges of the ribbon and gives you the ability to shape the ribbon into the perfect bow. The Prop House and VM+ stock a large range of wired ribbon as well as green florist wire....

How to Trim the Perfect Christmas Tree

Ever wondered how those Christmas trees in shopping centres are decorated so PERFECTLY?  Every bauble seemingly in its specific place, amazingly even distribution of those ever-tangling lights and perfect ratio of bauble colours and textures, all while never seeing how they are hung on the tree or even that the lights have leads? Well, never fear, we are going to let you in on our tree trimming secrets! Follow our steps to success and you’ll be trimming like a professional! 1. Assemble your tree and fluff out the branches. Start at the bottom and work your way up row by row. To create a full tree shape you will need to separate the tree tips from the main branch. Start with the pair of fronds closest to the central trunk, make an upward v shape and continue this process along the branch ensuring that the fronds are at varying heights. To add realism to the odd frond can be positioned in a downward v. 2. Visually divide your tree into two sections. Begin lighting each section of your tree from the top in a zig zag motion to the base. To ensure you achieve the best positioning if lights have them turned on whilst positioning. Make sure you try to conceal all wires and wrap the tip of a frond around the base of the light bulb to keep it upright and in place. 3. Divide your decoration into two even piles. Decorate your tree one section at a time. Start by putting all larger decoration on first then the second largest and so on, to create an even...
