Each year the biggest and best department stores in New York City, London & Paris unveil their Christmas Holiday window displays for the delight of local shoppers, tourists, families and us, all the way over here in Brisbane! The major stores spend the better part of a year planning these windows, each trying to outdo each other and top their 2013 productions. Christmas displays are always sure to be full of wonder and magical excitement- these are our favourite holiday windows for 2014!
Madison Avenue and Barneys received the Baz Luhrmann treatment as their christmas windows for 2014 were revealed. The story, titled ‘BAZDAZZLED’ introduced a full sensory experience, with live performances and larger than life sets. The four windows, each depicting a display of a different word: Truth, Love, Beauty and Freedom showed a wonderland of woodland creatures, elves and an ice dancer. Each window display had its own message and story that was told by the colours, props, music and movement of the live acts. See more on this exciting display here.
The huge seven floor department stores displays are always an exciting must-see for all London goers. This year eleven designers collaborated their talents to produce “The Land of Make Believe- A Little Christmas Tail”. The display depicts a traditional Scandinavian landscape with snow covered trees, blue skies and tiny white mice acting as Santa’s elves helping Harrods to prepare for Christmas. Harrods also released a festive animated film telling the story behind the mice in the windows.
Harvey Nichols, London//
Harvey Nichols didn’t disappoint with this year’s magical ‘Enchanted Forest’ display. The displays, which fill all Harvey Nichols windows in the UK, took 600 hours to install, each taking one week and a large team to finish. The ‘Into the Woods’ display included 12 foot tall artificial trees, mannequins-turned-woodland creatures, hand-crafted & painted branches (2,524 to be exact!) and fashion from the likes of Alexander McQueen and Lanvin. This gorgeous window is an incredible 3-dimensional forest that creates an atmosphere and illusion of something more beyond, which makes passersby look further into the display.
Selfridges chose a theme of ‘Storytelling’ for their Christmas window displays for 2014. Each window shows a different fairy tale setting- with a twist. The window displays depict an enchanting take on each tale with Hansel & Gretal and a house made of sweets from the Selfridges food hall, Cinderella opening boxes of shoes, Rapunzel with a shock of pink hair, Snow White surrounded in bright red apples, Little Red Riding Hood with a custom Peter Pilotto cape, and the list goes on. The displays are bright, intriguing and beautiful viewed as a whole. See more pictures of this display here.
